About the exhibition:
This exhibition is by nine artists: Diane Gerrard, Jean Higgs, Tracy Holtham, Sandy Layton, Ana Mejia, Heidi Moxon, Mark Tamer, Paul Wood and Wei Xun. It is the culmination of their working together for a year as participants in a course at the City Lit, sharing ideas and discussing our work.
The work on display illustrates their different ideas and practices, as does the range of materials they have employed to create our paintings, collages, photographs and ceramics.
They have called this exhibition ‘ctrl’ because they feel this key-board mnemonic encapsulates the play of tensions between exercising and letting go of control which they deal with when making work; between exercising the skills they have developed in manipulating materials, and with growing confidence in allowing surprise, spontaneity to emerge.
Their work references universal themes including the passing of time, decay, change, social, political and gender issues and they hope it offers viewers a glimpse of something illusive, difficult to categorise, which lies deep inside ourselves.
